Germany’s Alexander Zverev has reached the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters after defeating France’s Terence Atmane in straight sets, in a match that proved far from easy for the tournament’s top-ranked player.
Atmane put up strong resistance from the start, forcing Zverev to rely on a tiebreak to take the opening set before the German also secured the second set to book his place in the next round after two hours and nine minutes of play.
Zverev will face American Tommy Paul in the round of 16. Paul came from behind to defeat Paraguay’s Adolfo Daniel Vallejo 2-1. After losing the opening set 6-3, Paul regained his composure and won the second and third sets 6-3, 6-4.
France’s Arthur Fils also advanced to the round of 16 after defeating Czech player Jiří Lehečka in three sets, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3. He will face Australian Alex de Minaur in the next round.
